PFAS Chemicals – What are they?
Per and Poly-Fluoro-Alkyl Substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals, in use since the 1950’s. Carbon and Fluorine form the strongest bond in nature, and since that discovery, have been used in almost every industry because they deliver incredible properties: they make products resistant to heat, chemical-breakdown, water, dirt / grease and they reduce friction.
However their strengths are what makes them hazardous to human health. They do not breakdown, persisting in nature, hence their name ‘Forever Chemicals’. PFAS have the potential to build up in water, soil, crops grown in contaminated soil and to become airborne in household dust and industry emissions. Some PFAS can build up in people and animals when they are repeatedly exposed to PFAS over time.
